Salesforce Health Cloud and EMR integration for clinics
How Salesforce and Health Cloud connect to an EMR: FHIR R4, HL7 v2, MuleSoft's healthcare accelerator, and what changes for a Canadian clinic's EMR.

The short version
Health Cloud is Salesforce's product for healthcare, built on the Salesforce CRM.
Salesforce connects to EHRs mainly through MuleSoft, using FHIR R4 APIs and HL7 v2 messages.
MuleSoft's healthcare accelerator ships templates for common EHR use cases, including a generic FHIR client.
Many Canadian community EMRs expose their own APIs and partner routes, so the integration follows what the EMR supports.
Clinic Conductor connects the CRM a clinic runs, Salesforce included, to its EMR and the rest of its systems.
Salesforce and Health Cloud in brief
Salesforce is the CRM many multi-site clinics and health organizations standardize on.
Health Cloud adds a healthcare data model on top: patients, care teams, care plans and
providers. It is built for the relationship with the patient; the EMR remains the clinical
record.
How Salesforce reaches an EHR
Routes from Salesforce to an EHR
Route
What it is
Best fit
FHIR R4 APIs
Standard REST resources for patients, appointments, observations and more
EHRs that publish FHIR endpoints
HL7 v2 messages
The older event messages hospitals and labs still run on
Admissions, orders and results feeds
MuleSoft Accelerator for Healthcare
Salesforce's prebuilt APIs and templates on the MuleSoft platform
Teams standardizing on MuleSoft
The EMR's own API
A vendor API with its own authorization model
Many Canadian community EMRs
The route depends on the EMR. A Salesforce project that assumes FHIR everywhere stalls at the first EMR that does not expose it.
Privacy and agreements
Salesforce signs a Business Associate Agreement with US customers for the services it lists as
covered. For Canadian clinics, PHIPA, PIPEDA and Québec's Law 25 decide what may sit in
the CRM and where. The same principle as any CRM applies: keep clinical detail in the EMR, and
send Salesforce what the relationship needs.
What to ask before you plan
Which EMR, version and hosting does each clinic in the group run?
Does that EMR publish FHIR endpoints, a vendor API, or partner routes only?
Which objects in Salesforce will hold patient information, and who can see them?
Who runs the integration day to day, and who handles exceptions?
The integrations that return hours connect the phone line, forms, faxes and booking as well
as the CRM. Our EMR integration guide explains how one
layer handles all of them.
Questions, answered
Can Salesforce Health Cloud integrate with an EMR?
Yes. Salesforce connects to EHRs mainly through MuleSoft, using FHIR R4 APIs and HL7 v2 messages, or through the EMR's own API where it has one.
Does Salesforce work with Canadian EMRs like Jane App, Oscar Pro or Accuro?
Through an integration layer that speaks each EMR's supported interface. Clinic Conductor is live in production with Jane App, Oscar Pro and TELUS Health, and connects them to the clinic's CRM.
